Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 10 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu is set to express her views on 'Dignity for All' as she presides over the NHRC's event in honor of Human Rights Day on Wednesday.
The President is anticipated to emphasize the significance of responsive governance and effective public service delivery as pivotal in providing essential amenities, justice, liberty, equality, and dignity for every individual, according to an official statement.
Alongside her, NHRC Chairperson V. Ramasubramanian and P. K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, are also expected to participate in this important event.
In alignment with the United Nations' chosen theme for this year’s Human Rights Day, 'Everyday Essentials', the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will host a National Conference focused on 'Ensuring Everyday Essentials: Public Services and Dignity for All'.
During this conference, Mishra will be delivering the keynote address.
An NHRC statement highlighted that the theme of the conference is reflective of the nation’s developmental journey, reinforcing that human rights are essential components that influence one’s quality of life through vital services such as healthcare, education, housing, justice, financial inclusion, and social protection.
The Commission asserts that responsive governance and efficient public services are crucial in guaranteeing equitable access to basic amenities and fulfilling the constitutional promise of justice, liberty, equality, and dignity for all.
In recent years, India has achieved significant advancements in improving access to basic amenities through initiatives like PM Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission, Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra, Ayushman Bharat, National Education Policy, Van Bandhu Kalyan Yojana, and the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme.
Nonetheless, these welfare policies must be continually supported with enhanced efforts to ensure there are no discrepancies in access, awareness, and accountability.
The conference will feature two sessions—'Basic Amenities for All: A Human Rights Approach' and 'Ensuring Public Services and Dignity For All'—aimed at discussing these critical issues. Esteemed domain experts, Secretaries to the Government of India, and other senior officials are expected to engage and deliberate on these initiatives during the sessions.
Since 1950, Human Rights Day has been observed annually on December 10, commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.
