New Delhi, July 30 (NationPress) Wayanad Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra organized a demonstration on the grounds of Parliament on Wednesday, advocating for the release of nuns who are currently imprisoned in Chhattisgarh.
The nuns were taken into custody on July 26 under accusations of human trafficking and forcible religious conversion.
In response to Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar's claim on Tuesday that the arrest stemmed from a miscommunication, and that neither trafficking nor conversion occurred, the Congress party persisted with its protest, alleging that the authorities are targeting minorities.
Speaking to the press, Priyanka Gandhi stated, "Nuns from Kerala were treated very poorly. They faced unfounded accusations. They were manhandled and taken away by the Chhattisgarh Police. We are protesting against this attack on minority groups."
She added, "We demand an end to such atrocities against minorities. No one should be falsely accused of actions they haven’t committed. We have already raised this issue in Parliament and will continue to do so."
When questioned about expectations of government action, the Congress leader remarked, "Honestly, the government acts only in pursuit of publicity and during elections. I don't anticipate any action from them, but it is our responsibility to voice our concerns."
This protest coincides with rising discontent regarding the Centre's handling of the disaster-stricken state of Kerala.
The Ministry of Home Affairs informed the Lok Sabha on July 2 that no financial assistance has been allocated to Kerala under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) for the financial years 2023-24 and 2024-25, despite the state enduring multiple natural calamities, including devastating floods and landslides in Wayanad.
Reacting strongly, Priyanka remarked, "Even though a year has elapsed, those who endured that disaster are still in distress. Despite our efforts and the goodwill that arose then, they continue to face difficulties."
She continued, "There are numerous systemic issues, and importantly, the funds dispatched by the Central government were issued as a loan, which is unprecedented. The intention was to assist them with financial challenges; how can they repay these loans? It's a trivial amount for the Central government, and they ought to waive these loans," added the Wayanad MP.
