Why is Priyanka Gandhi Opposing the Renaming of MGNREGA?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 13 (NationPress) Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra raised concerns on Saturday about the government's reported initiative to rename the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). She argued that such a change would incur unnecessary public spending without providing any real advantages to the citizens.
Her comments were made following reports indicating that the Union Cabinet had approved a Bill to rename this key rural employment program and to extend the number of guaranteed workdays.
As per these reports, MGNREGA is set to be rebranded as 'Poojya Bapu Grameen Rozgar Yojna', with the annual employment guarantee increasing from 100 days to 125 days.
During a press interaction, Priyanka Gandhi expressed her confusion over the rationale behind altering the name of a significant welfare program that has been in existence since 2005.
"I can't comprehend the thought process behind this. This program honors Mahatma Gandhi's legacy, and changing its name means that government resources will be wasted on renaming everything associated with it. This is a substantial process that incurs costs, so what is the benefit of such actions? It baffles me," she stated.
Congress MP Rajeev Shukla echoed Priyanka Gandhi's sentiments, deeming the proposed renaming as "unnecessary".
In comments to IANS, Shukla highlighted, "I observed Priyanka Gandhi questioning why Mahatma Gandhi's name is being removed. The name 'Bapu' is common among many people in Gujarat. This decision seems superfluous, yet it is being pursued."
In contrast, the BJP responded sharply to the criticism.
BJP MP Brij Lal argued that Priyanka Gandhi should embrace the decision, asserting that the renaming pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi rather than undermining his legacy.
"MGNREGA has been renamed in honor of Bapu, who is revered as our Rashtrapita (Father of the Nation). This should be supported by everyone, including Priyanka Gandhi. Her issue seems to stem from her being a 'fake Gandhi'; she objects to the removal of the name 'Gandhi'," Brij Lal told IANS.
Currently, MGNREGA guarantees at least 100 days of wage employment each financial year to rural households whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual labor.
Any Indian citizen aged 18 years or above residing in rural areas can apply for the scheme, with employment mandated to be provided within 15 days of demand.
Wages are directly credited to bank or post office accounts, ensuring equal pay for men and women, and the program operates nationwide, excluding fully urban districts.
