New Delhi, March 3 (NationPress) On this World Wildlife Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the central government's commitment to protecting and preserving the nation's abundant biodiversity.
In a message shared on X, PM Modi highlighted the significance of wildlife conservation: "Today, on World Wildlife Day, let's reaffirm our dedication to safeguarding the remarkable biodiversity of our planet. Each species is crucial -- let’s ensure their survival for future generations!"
He expressed pride in India's role in wildlife preservation.
As part of his dedication to wildlife conservation, the Prime Minister will visit Sasan Gir, Gujarat, a region famous for being the last home of the Asiatic lion.
This visit aligns with this year’s theme, 'Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet,' emphasizing the necessity for sustainable funding and community involvement in conservation efforts.
During his visit, PM Modi plans to inaugurate a newly built veterinary hospital in Sasan Gir, aimed at improving healthcare for the Asiatic lion population.
After this, he will return to Singh Sadan to chair a meeting of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL), where key wildlife conservation strategies will be discussed. He will also interact with women forest staff in the area, promoting inclusivity and enhancing female participation in conservation initiatives.
Gujarat has been a leader in lion conservation, implementing dedicated measures to protect and expand the habitat of the Asiatic lion.
Currently, these majestic big cats roam nearly 30,000 square kilometers, covering 53 talukas across nine districts of the state. To strengthen conservation efforts, the Gujarat government has established a National Referral Centre for Wildlife over a 20.24-hectare area in Junagadh.
The state has also rolled out advanced facilities, including a high-tech wildlife monitoring center and a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital in Sasan Gir, providing cutting-edge care for endangered species.
Recognizing the importance of law enforcement in conservation, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi commended the coordinated efforts of the Gujarat Police and the Forest Department in protecting the state's wildlife.
In 2024, the state government enhanced its conservation framework by hiring 237 beat guards, including 162 men and 75 women, to bolster surveillance and protection within the Gir Protected Area. These initiatives aim not only to safeguard Asiatic lions but also to support the conservation of other endangered species in the region.
Gujarat's commitment to wildlife conservation is further demonstrated by the success of the 'Gir Samvad Setu' initiative, which has facilitated over 300 community engagement programs to address local issues and raise conservation awareness.
Moreover, nine breeding centers have been established to preserve herbivorous species vital for maintaining the balance of the Gir ecosystem.
