Chandigarh, April 13 (NationPress) In a significant gesture honoring Guru Granth Sahib, the Punjab Assembly, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has unanimously approved the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which enforces stricter penalties for ‘beadbi’ (sacrilege) against the living Guru Sahib.

In a bold and unwavering stance, the AAP administration has introduced life imprisonment for ‘beadbi’, establishing one of the most stringent legal frameworks in the nation to combat such offenses.

The Chief Minister characterized this legislation as a crucial rectification of the shortcomings of previous administrations, ensuring prompt investigations, rendering offenses non-bailable, and imposing severe penalties ranging from five years to life imprisonment, along with fines reaching up to Rs 20 lakh. The law also holds accomplices in ‘beadbi’ equally responsible.

Contrasting sharply with prior governments, Mann emphasized that while the Akali-BJP and Congress sought electoral support invoking the name of Guru Sahib, it is the AAP government that has enacted tangible measures to protect the sanctity of Guru Granth Sahib-ji and deter any future acts of sacrilege.

During the debate, CM Mann asserted, “I assure this esteemed House that this Bill marks the termination of desecration in the future, ensuring that no individual will dare to commit such atrocious crimes.” He pointed out that previous sacrilegious acts against Sri Guru Granth Sahib-ji were part of a deep-seated conspiracy aimed at disrupting the hard-earned peace, amity, brotherhood, and communal harmony in Punjab.

Expressing sorrow and outrage over such ‘inhuman and heinous acts’, he identified them as offenses against humanity committed by a small group of anti-social individuals intent on disturbing the state’s peace and unity.

“This legislation guarantees that anyone convicted of this unforgivable crime will face severe consequences, serving as a deterrent to others,” he stated.

He further asserted, “Punjabis have consistently upheld the values of peace and brotherhood in our state, and no force can undermine the strong social fabric we share. Our government is resolute in maintaining peace and communal harmony, actively countering any threats to the state’s progress and prosperity.”

Highlighting the importance of this legislation, the Chief Minister remarked, “If Sri Guru Granth Sahib is not secure in Punjab, where else can it be?” adding that this Bill represents a pivotal milestone in combating ‘beadbi’.

Regarding procedural matters, he clarified, “Since this Bill is a state initiative, it does not require Presidential approval. It will be forwarded to the Governor following its passage by the Assembly.”
