Punjab Critiques National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing for Overlooking MSP

Chandigarh, Dec 27 (NationPress) Punjab has pointed out that the draft policy of the National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing neglects the minimum support price (MSP), which is essential for the state's farmers. On Thursday, officials announced that they are carefully analyzing the document and are committed to examining every clause in detail.
A team comprising officers and agricultural specialists is interpreting the nuances within the policy's text, according to a statement from the state government.
Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian, alongside Punjab Mandi Board Chairman Harchand Singh Barsat and other officials, held a collaborative session with ‘arthiyas’ (commission agents) and rice millers from the state to gather their insights and recommendations regarding the draft policy.
During the discussions, it was highlighted that the draft policy is completely mute on the MSP, a critical aspect for farmers. Additionally, the proposal to enhance private markets could potentially undermine the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) markets, as per the statement.
The meeting raised concerns that if APMC markets deteriorate, it could result in the exploitation of farmers and traditional traders.
The minister emphasized the importance of the rural development fund (RDF) and market development fund (MDF), stating that they are essential for sustaining the state’s agricultural infrastructure, particularly market facilities and the roads linking these marketing yards to rural areas.
He urged the ‘arthiyas’, led by Vijay Kalra and Ravinder Singh Cheema, as well as millers led by Tarsem Saini, to forward their feedback and concerns to the Punjab Mandi Board to ensure these are included in the response to the Union government.
Minister Khudian reaffirmed that the state government is dedicated to protecting the interests of farmers and will take all necessary measures to uphold their rights.
