New Delhi, Dec 5 (NationPress) Harsimrat Kaur Badal, a prominent leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, has formally requested the Election Commission of India to initiate the suspension of Varun Sharma, the Senior Superintendent of Police in Patiala. In her appeal, she called for disciplinary actions against him and other police officials who allegedly executed unlawful orders aimed at hindering nominations and intimidating voters during the Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections in Punjab.
The Member of Parliament representing Bathinda presented a memorandum to the ECI, advocating for the deployment of paramilitary forces to ensure a fair electoral process. She also insisted on a comprehensive inquiry, conducted by a high-level committee under the ECI, to verify the authenticity of a leaked audio recording and to hold accountable those responsible for extensive violence, rigging, and undermining democracy in the region.
Harsimrat further urged for severe repercussions against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including the potential revocation of their political registration. The audio in question, brought to light by SAD President Sukhbir Badal, revealed the Patiala SSP instructing district police to unlawfully detain opposition candidates in plain clothes prior to their nomination submissions, following directives from AAP legislators.
She emphasized that the audio recording was unedited and featured voices of identifiable officers and key figures. The patterns of obstruction during the nomination period, along with the detention of opposition members and selective police protection for AAP supporters reported in Patiala and nearby areas, further corroborated the authenticity of the audio.
Harsimrat Kaur insisted that the recorded call undergo a forensic analysis, especially given the AAP government's efforts to dismiss it as fabricated. She reminded the commission of a previous instance where the ECI had suspended the former SSP, Ravjot Kaur Grewal, for biased conduct and misuse of police resources for electoral purposes.
