New Delhi, Dec 10 (NationPress) Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday shifted the focus from the inquiry into Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's trip to Germany during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament to the foreign travels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Why are they (BJP) questioning the Leader of Opposition's travels when PM Modi spends nearly half his working hours abroad?” Priyanka Gandhi stated while addressing reporters.

Media reports suggest that Rahul Gandhi intends to visit Germany to engage with members of the Indian diaspora and German government officials. The timing of this visit has ignited a political debate concerning his obligations as the LoP while Parliament is in session.

Earlier, CPI(M) MP Amraram remarked that the Leader of Opposition (LoP) should prioritize being present during parliamentary sessions.

When probed about the reasons behind Gandhi's overseas trip, CPI(M) MP Amraram expressed to IANS, “Only he knows why he is leaving during the session. I believe it is essential for the Leader of the Opposition to be present here whenever Parliament is in session.”

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also criticized Rahul Gandhi for his foreign travels, accusing him of being frequently abroad during parliamentary sessions.

“Gandhi claims he doesn't have a chance to speak in Parliament. However, the reality is that he is often absent,” Joshi remarked, labeling him as “a part-time, non-serious political leader.”

Furthermore, the Union Minister elaborated, “Let him go. He is mostly abroad whenever Parliament is in session. Later, he claims he doesn't get a chance to speak, but the truth is, he isn't even here... He is a part-time, non-serious political leader.”

As the Winter Session of Parliament extends until December 19, the proposed timing of Gandhi's visit has raised new doubts about his dedication to his parliamentary responsibilities as the Leader of the Opposition.

Gandhi has previously expressed concerns regarding the government's alleged discouragement of foreign dignitaries from meeting him in his official capacity as Leader of the Opposition.

However, the government countered that decisions regarding meetings with dignitaries lie solely with the visiting delegations, not with Indian authorities, and pointed to recent occasions when Gandhi did meet with visiting foreign leaders.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize the significance of balancing international engagements with domestic responsibilities. While concerns about the LoP's presence in Parliament are valid, the broader context of political leaders' international relations must be acknowledged. The discourse should aim for constructive dialogue rather than partisan criticism.
