Mumbai, Jan 14 (NationPress): Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Wednesday that the Airports Authority of India has opted to shift the high-frequency airport radar currently situated at Dahisar to Gorai in the north-western suburbs of Mumbai. He confirmed that this decision has also garnered the endorsement of the Union Minister for Civil Aviation.
In a statement on X, the Chief Minister expressed gratitude, saying, “The state government had already resolved to allocate land at Gorai for this initiative. Thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu. This move has opened the door for redevelopment in this region.”
During the winter session, the Chief Minister had revealed in the state Assembly on December 13 last year the relocation of high-frequency radar stations at Dahisar and Juhu to facilitate the redevelopment of buildings in those locales.
“There are high-frequency radar stations at Dahisar and Juhu. Redevelopment in the vicinity of these radar stations is currently unfeasible due to height limitations imposed by the stations. To address this, the government has made the decision to relocate these radar stations to other technically viable sites,” he stated.
CM Fadnavis mentioned that the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have consented to the relocation of the Dahisar radar to Gorai.
“The Government of Maharashtra has shown its willingness to cover the costs associated with this relocation and to provide alternate land to the Government of India. The land in Gorai will be handed over to the Government of India without charge. In exchange, the AAI will convert 60 percent of its land in Dahisar into a public garden,” he added.
Additionally, Union Minister of Commerce Piyush Goyal, who represents North Mumbai, stated in December that relocating the high-frequency airport radar from Dahisar to Gorai would facilitate housing and redevelopment projects in Dahisar, Magathane, and Borivali that have been stalled for years. This initiative will unlock approximately 6 kilometers for long-awaited housing development.
Union Minister Goyal noted that over the next few years, around 50,000 homes are expected to be built or redeveloped, paving the way for durable homes equipped with essential amenities and generating significant employment opportunities. This decision was disclosed following a crucial meeting.
He remarked, “This was not a simple matter. After years of persistent follow-up, this landmark decision has been made possible through effective collaboration between the Central and state governments. In the upcoming months, all stalled projects will resume rapidly, propelling North Mumbai towards becoming an ‘Uttam Mumbai’.”
