What is the Issue with Rahul Gandhi Quoting a Published Source? Priyanka Vadra Questions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 4 (NationPress) During a session in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), referenced a published article featuring excerpts from former Army chief General Manoj Naravane’s memoir regarding the India-China standoff. In response, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra emphasized that he was quoting from a verified source and questioned the objections raised against his remarks in the House.
This incident has sparked renewed tensions between Rahul Gandhi and the BJP in the Lok Sabha, specifically concerning General M.M. Naravane’s unpublished memoir.
The mention of the memoir triggered significant uproar earlier this week, leading to the suspension of eight Congress MPs on allegations of “unruly behavior”.
The controversial memoir is tied to an article in Caravan magazine that suggests indecisiveness among political leaders during the 2020 face-off with China.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra asserted, “He is quoting from a published source. He verified it yesterday. So, what is the issue with him speaking? When they deliver speeches, they often reference books; even the Prime Minister has cited Sanjaya Baru. As long as it is from a published source, it’s acceptable.”
She also addressed the restriction placed on Rahul Gandhi from speaking in the Lok Sabha, which was enforced by the Speaker.
Commenting on the suspension of certain MPs, she remarked, “This isn’t merely about the LoP being silenced; it’s a fundamental issue regarding democracy and parliamentary procedures. This Parliament stands as a temple of democracy, and the entire nation places its trust in it. Democracy implies a right to express opinions and engage in discussions on all matters.”
“There have indeed been discussions concerning China, foreign affairs, and Pakistan. Both the government and the Opposition have presented their views. They are merely afraid of the revelations that may arise,” she continued.
“They have not permitted the publication of that book. As far as I know, it contains information that highlights the response of our top leadership, including PM Modi, during a crisis, specifically when China posed a threat at the border. It clearly illustrates the character of this government when the nation is under attack.”
Meanwhile, LoP Rahul Gandhi had sent a letter to Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday, claiming that for the first time in parliamentary history, the Speaker has been compelled to prevent the LoP from addressing the President’s Address upon the government's insistence.
In his correspondence, Rahul Gandhi stated that the rights of the Leader of the Opposition and all Members of Parliament to speak are vital to democracy, and the denial of this right has created an unprecedented scenario.
