Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday, 9 September held a 'Janata Darbar' in his parliamentary constituency of Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, listening to a wide range of public grievances during his multi-day visit. Workers of the Samajwadi Party (SP) also attended the meeting, signalling continued cooperation between the INDIA bloc allies at the ground level.

Key Grievances Raised by Locals

Residents used the platform to flag long-pending civic issues. One local raised the condition of the Lucknow Road leading to ITI — a stretch connecting the Raebareli-Lucknow Highway and the Sultanpur Highway — which is riddled with potholes despite housing institutions such as NIFT and ITI and a prominent temple frequented by large crowds. The resident noted that a 'bhoomi pujan' had been performed twice for the road's construction, but the work remained incomplete. 'Rahul Gandhi has assured us that he will look into it,' the resident said.

A local woman urged Gandhi to conduct a tour of the city during future visits to better assess ground-level problems. Gandhi reportedly assured her that he would address these concerns going forward.

SP Leaders Demand Kargil Martyr Memorial

Akhilesh Mahi, State Secretary of the Mulayam Singh Youth Brigade, met Gandhi to demand the construction of a memorial and a public square named after Rajendra Yadav, a martyr from Rae Bareli who lost his life during the 1999 Kargil War. According to Mahi, no statue or memorial has been established in Yadav's honour in Rae Bareli to date. Mahi stated that Gandhi assured him of prompt action on the matter. Mahi also expressed confidence that the INDIA bloc would form a government with an absolute majority in Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming Assembly elections, adding that Gandhi's support would pose a stiff challenge to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Other Delegations at the Janata Darbar

Office-bearers of the Mahila Congress also met Gandhi at the event. Shailaja Singh, District President of the Congress women's wing, welcomed Gandhi to Rae Bareli and praised him for championing youth causes at a recent student-focused event.

Anil Mishra, President of the Freedom Fighters' Descendants Organisation, submitted a memorandum demanding preservation of the contributions of the state's freedom fighters and early completion of pending beautification work at the Munshiganj Martyrs' Memorial.

Jyoti Behan from the Brahma Kumaris met Gandhi and tied a 'rakhi' on his wrist. A representative of the organisation said: 'On behalf of the Brahma Kumaris institution and the people of the district, we extended our best wishes to him. We hope that he continues to visit here and that the city keeps progressing.'

Bullion Traders Flag GST Concerns

On Tuesday night, Gandhi held a separate meeting with bullion traders, who raised the issue of a nearly 50 per cent decline in gold and silver trade, attributing it to increased GST on the two commodities. Gandhi reportedly assured the traders that the matter would be raised in Parliament.

Disha Meeting Closes the Visit

On the final day of his constituency visit, Gandhi chaired a 'Disha Meeting' at 'Bachaav Bhawan' in Rae Bareli, where he reviewed development works with local officials. The multi-pronged engagement — covering civic infrastructure, war memorials, trade concerns, and women's issues — reflects a deliberate effort to consolidate his presence in a constituency he won in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls on the horizon, the visit is likely to set the tone for the Opposition's outreach strategy in the state.
