Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday, 19 May, launched a sharp attack on the Centre over rising inflation and economic distress during a two-day visit to Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh. Addressing villagers after inaugurating a community hall built from MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds at Thakurain Kheda village in the Bachhrawan Assembly constituency, Gandhi warned that the economic situation could worsen in the days ahead.

Speaking at the inauguration, Gandhi said the unrelenting rise in prices of petrol, diesel, and essential commodities has made daily life increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens. He stated that the common people of the country are facing mounting financial pressure while, in his assessment, the government is not paying adequate attention to their concerns.

Gandhi specifically flagged the deteriorating condition of small businessmen and the working class, and urged the Union government to introduce measures that provide tangible relief to these sections. He asserted that farmers, labourers, youth, and small traders stand to be hit hardest if the economic trajectory does not change.

Interacting with residents of Thakurain Kheda, Gandhi reiterated his commitment to fulfilling promises made to the people of Raebareli — the constituency he represents in the Lok Sabha. He said the condition of small businessmen and the working class has been 'steadily deteriorating' and called on the Centre to act decisively.

Earlier in the day, Gandhi visited the Churuwa temple and offered prayers on the occasion of Bada Mangal, also interacting with devotees and local residents at the temple premises.

Gandhi arrived in Lucknow on Tuesday morning and was received by party workers at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport. Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai and senior party leader Pramod Tiwari were among those present. He then proceeded to Raebareli by road.

During the two-day visit, Gandhi is scheduled to participate in public interaction programmes, women's outreach initiatives, and organisational meetings with party workers.
