Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Saturday, 27 June chaired a high-level review meeting at his official residence in Jaipur to examine long-standing issues surrounding the Panchna Dam and directed officials to implement all decisions within a fixed timeline, ensuring a permanent and sustainable solution for farmers dependent on the reservoir.

Key Developments from the Review Meeting

The meeting centred on three core areas: water management, irrigation infrastructure, and measures to protect the livelihoods of farmers in the dam's command area. Chief Minister Sharma made clear that every decision taken at the meeting must be executed within the prescribed schedule so that communities in the region receive timely and lasting benefits.

Sharma instructed officials to expedite repair, strengthening, and improvement works at the dam to enhance its operational efficiency and water storage capacity. He also directed the concerned departments to ensure that all lift irrigation projects linked to the Panchna Dam are completed within the stipulated timeframe.

Focus on Higher-Altitude Farmlands

A particular concern raised during the meeting was the difficulty farmers cultivating land in higher-altitude areas face in accessing canal water. The Chief Minister noted that the timely completion of lift irrigation projects would directly address this gap, bringing irrigation water to fields that have historically been left out of the canal network.

Sharma observed that strengthening irrigation infrastructure would not only improve agricultural productivity but also provide long-term relief to farmers by ensuring reliable water availability — a concern that has persisted across multiple cropping seasons in the region.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed that protecting farmers' interests and ensuring the efficient utilisation of available water resources remain among the state government's key priorities. He stressed that effective water management and balanced regional development must go hand in hand.

Sharma directed all concerned departments to work in close coordination, maintain regular monitoring of project progress, and proactively remove any administrative or technical bottlenecks that could delay implementation. He further called for an integrated approach to project execution so that the benefits of the Panchna Dam reach the maximum number of farmers and contribute to sustainable agricultural growth.

The review meeting was attended by Chief Secretary V. Srinivas, Additional Chief Secretary (Water Resources) Abhay Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Akhil Arora, and senior officials from the departments concerned. Together, they reviewed the progress of ongoing works and discussed the roadmap for timely execution of the decisions taken at the meeting.

With the monsoon season underway, the focus on dam safety, storage capacity, and irrigation delivery is expected to intensify in the weeks ahead.
