Rajasthan High Court Issues Contempt Notices Over Election Delays
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, April 2 (NationPress) The Rajasthan High Court has formally issued contempt notices to the State Election Commission (SEC) and State Election Commissioner Rajeshwar Singh due to significant delays in the implementation of panchayat and urban local body elections within the state.
This action was taken by a division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice S.P. Sharma while reviewing a contempt petition brought forth by former MLA Sanyam Lodha.
The court raised concerns regarding the SEC's issuance of a schedule for the revision of voter lists that extends past the deadline mandated by the court, despite previous directives.
The court has requested a comprehensive reply from the Commission within a four-week timeframe.
The petitioner's attorney, Puneet Singhavi, asserted that both the state government and the SEC are intentionally delaying the elections, which he argues constitutes a willful disregard for the High Court’s orders.
According to the Commission's timeline, the final voter list for local body elections is scheduled to be released on April 22. This timeline makes it impossible to hold elections by April 15, as previously ordered by the court.
During the proceedings, Advocate General Rajendra Prasad informed the bench that the state government plans to submit an application requesting an extension of the election schedule.
In response, the court remarked, “This will be addressed later. For now, how did the Election Commission prepare such a schedule?” The bench directed the SEC to provide answers to this question within four weeks.
In a ruling on November 14, 2025, the Rajasthan High Court had instructed the state government to conduct panchayat and local body elections by April 15, 2026.
It also required the delimitation process to be completed by December 31, 2025.
The Supreme Court upheld this timeline while reviewing petitions that challenged the High Court’s order, reiterating that elections must occur by April 15. At this juncture, no contempt notice has been issued to the state government.
