Jaipur road accident: Speeding SUV kills 4 family members in Phagi; highway blocked
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A speeding SUV killed four members of the same family — including a couple and their two daughters-in-law — on Madhorajpura Road near Phagi in Jaipur district on the night of Friday, 22 August, triggering grief and protests that shut down the Jaipur-Bhilwara Mega Highway for hours. The victims were struck while drying freshly harvested moong by the roadside, around three kilometres from Phagi on the Sarmathura-Phalodi Mega Highway.
How the Accident Unfolded
Satyanarayan Kumhar, 60, a resident of Dhamuniyon ka Mohalla in Phagi, had been drying bundles of moong from his farm by the roadside at approximately 7:30 pm when the SUV struck him, his wife, and two daughters-in-law. The force of the collision was severe enough to throw all four victims nearly 20 feet from the point of impact. All four died on the spot.
Police identified the deceased as Satyanarayan Kumhar, son of Panchuram Kumhar; his wife Manmauj, 55; daughter-in-law Amrita, 30, wife of Badri; and daughter-in-law Shimla, 25, wife of Suresh. The bodies were shifted to the mortuary of Phagi Sub-District Hospital by Phagi police.
Survivors and the Grief Left Behind
Amrita is survived by her 15-year-old daughter Priyanka and 13-year-old son Himanshu. The family had previously lost another child — a five-year-old son — in a separate road accident several years ago, compounding the tragedy.
Shimla, a trained nurse, is survived by her eight-month-old daughter Vanshika. Her husband Suresh works at a jewellery company in Jaipur.
Highway Blocked, Protests Erupt
As news of the deaths spread, a large number of villagers gathered outside Phagi Sub-District Hospital and demanded compensation for the bereaved family. Protesters subsequently blocked the Jaipur-Bhilwara Mega Highway, staging a sit-in that created long vehicle queues on both sides of the road.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Anil Doriya and Station House Officer (SHO) Pushpendra Bansiwal reached the spot with police personnel to pacify the crowd, but villagers held firm on their demand. By around 10 pm, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shivlal Bairwa and Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Balbir Singh also arrived and held discussions with protesters, eventually bringing the situation under control.
Government Response
Deputy Chief Minister Premchand Bairwa expressed condolences over the deaths in a social media post, describing the accident on SH-2 Chaksu Road in Phagi as 'deeply saddening and painful.' He stated that he had directed the concerned officials to provide all possible assistance to the affected family and prayed for strength for the bereaved.
This incident adds to a growing pattern of fatal road accidents on Rajasthan's expanding highway network, where higher vehicle speeds and inadequate roadside safety measures continue to put pedestrians at risk. Authorities are yet to announce any formal compensation package or action against the SUV driver.
