Thiruvananthapuram, March 30 (NationPress) Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the State President of BJP in Kerala and former Union Minister, has declared his decision to boycott the newly released Malayalam movie 'Empuraan', featuring superstar Mohanlal.
Directed by actor and filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, 'Empuraan' is the highly awaited sequel to the 2019 hit 'Lucifer'.
However, the film is embroiled in controversy, prompting the leader to voice his concerns.
On the social media platform X, Chandrasekhar expressed his dissatisfaction upon discovering significant modifications made to the film.
He disclosed that the filmmakers had agreed to implement 17 cuts in response to public outrage, necessitating a re-censorship process.
"I had enjoyed Lucifer and was excited to see Empuraan as its sequel. But now I’ve learned that the creators themselves have made 17 edits and that the movie is undergoing re-censorship," he mentioned.
Chandrasekhar criticized the alleged distortion of facts within the film, stating, "A movie should be appreciated as a film. It can’t be perceived as a historical account. Any film attempting to craft a narrative by misrepresenting the truth is destined to fail."
"So, will I view this sequel to Lucifer? No. Am I let down by this style of filmmaking? Yes," he added.
The controversy arose after the film's debut on Friday, with audiences raising concerns regarding certain scenes that reportedly illustrated the 2002 Gujarat violence.
Prominent RSS leaders, J. Nandkumar and A. Jayakumar, expressed their disapproval on social media.
Numerous RSS-linked organizations in Kerala also condemned the film, escalating the backlash.
As per sources close to the production, the film is currently undergoing re-censorship with 17 cuts.
The antagonist's name, Baba Bajrangi, will be altered. The film allegedly depicts central investigative agencies such as the NIA, IB, and ED in a negative light. These scenes are also expected to be omitted as part of the re-censorship.
Meanwhile, sympathizers of RSS have directed their frustration towards the regional censor board members, accusing them of negligence.
