How has Rajkot’s Atal Sarovar become a significant urban attraction?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, Jan 23 (NationPress) Gujarat has made significant strides in urban development over the last two decades, prominently showcased by the development of Atal Sarovar in Rajkot. This remarkable project, part of the Rajkot Smart City initiative, has welcomed over 1.4 million visitors since its inauguration, highlighting its status as a popular destination for recreation and culture.
The journey towards planned urban development in Gujarat commenced in 2005 when the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi proclaimed it as the Urban Development Year.
Following this foundation, the current government, led by Bhupendra Patel, has declared 2025 as another Urban Development Year, celebrating two decades of consistent growth fueled by strategic planning, progressive policies, and efficient implementation.
During this time, cities such as Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot have experienced remarkable enhancements in infrastructure and civic amenities. Atal Sarovar was inaugurated by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in March 2024 and opened to the public on May 1, 2024, coinciding with Gujarat Foundation Day.
Since its launch, over 14 lakh visitors have enjoyed the lake area, designed as a contemporary recreational and cultural venue. The complex features diverse attractions, including beautifully landscaped gardens, a designated children's park, a Ferris wheel, boating opportunities, and a toy train.
Fitness enthusiasts can take advantage of walking and cycling paths, complemented by solar-paneled parking facilities for approximately 600 cars and 1,000 two-wheelers. The project also includes two amphitheaters, a welcoming entrance plaza, a party plot, an open food court with 16 stalls, a closed food court housing 12 stalls, and a Gram Haat featuring 42 shops under the Rajkot Municipal Corporation, ensuring ongoing revenue streams.
A towering flag mast, light-and-sound shows, and various other public amenities further enhance its attractiveness.
Occupying 75 acres, Atal Sarovar has been constructed on the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R), placing a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability.
As part of the Rajkot Smart City plan, three lakes are being developed within a 930-acre greenfield area to foster water conservation through an integrated stormwater network. At Atal Sarovar, 25 acres are reserved for water storage with a capacity of 477 million litres, while the remaining 50 acres consist of landscaped green areas, recreational zones, and public facilities.
The entire project has been completed at a cost of Rs 136 crore, which includes operations and maintenance for a period of 15 years.
During the monsoon season, the lake naturally accumulates rainwater, while in the summer months, recycled water from the Smart City's TTP system is utilized.
Officials have noted that this is the first initiative in the Saurashtra region that has successfully implemented the 3R principles on such a substantial scale in urban development. With its combination of sustainability, recreational opportunities, and civic infrastructure, Atal Sarovar is swiftly becoming an iconic destination in Rajkot and a benchmark for future urban projects in Gujarat.
