Court Grants Bail to Director Ranjith Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kochi, April 10 (NationPress) In a significant legal development, a magistrate court in Ernakulam has granted bail to Malayalam film director Ranjith, following his arrest over allegations of sexual harassment by a young actress.
The court issued the bail under specific conditions, even as the prosecution voiced strong objections, citing fears of potential witness tampering.
According to the prosecution, many crucial witnesses are involved in Ranjith's projects, raising concerns that his release could compromise their testimonies and hinder the ongoing investigation.
Furthermore, they argued that Ranjith had shown reluctance to fully cooperate with authorities during his preceding three-day custody interrogation earlier this month.
Conversely, the defense maintained that no new custody request had been submitted and highlighted that the filmmaker had not contested either his arrest or the previous custody ruling.
Ranjith's legal representative underscored his readiness to assist with the inquiry, assuring the court of his commitment to appear before investigators as needed.
During the proceedings, Ranjith assured the court that he would refrain from attempting to influence any witnesses or accessing locations where they might be present, further noting that he continues to follow a prescribed medication regimen.
The allegations stem from a complaint claiming that the director attempted to sexually assault the actress within a caravan during a film shoot in Fort Kochi earlier this year.
In response to the complaint, the police in Ernakulam filed a First Information Report and documented the survivor’s confidential statement prior to proceeding with Ranjith’s arrest.
Ranjith was apprehended in Thodupuzha on March 31, subsequently being remanded to judicial custody.
He faces charges under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 74, 75, and 79, which address assault, sexual harassment, and actions intended to outrage a woman’s modesty.
After the bail documents were processed, the director, who had been held at the Ernakulam Sub Jail, was released. Throughout this ordeal, he has consistently denied the allegations, asserting that the accusations against him are untrue.
