Can Revered Leaders Be Above the Law? Maulana Rashidi Calls for Action in Avimukteshwaranand Case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 22 (NationPress) The head of the All India Imam Organisation, Maulana Sajid Rashidi, voiced strong criticism against Swami Avimukteshwaranand on Sunday. He pointed out that the recent special court ruling mandating the filing of an FIR against Avimukteshwaranand under the POCSO Act for alleged sexual misconduct with minors reveals a disturbing truth: that esteemed religious figures, often adored like deities, may conceal a sinister and criminal nature.
Rashidi termed this development as “deeply alarming” and insisted on rigorous legal action, emphasizing that no spiritual stature should exempt anyone from the law.
In an interview with IANS, Rashidi remarked that while Avimukteshwaranand was previously seen as a transparent and trustworthy religious authority, the court's directive to file an FIR under the POCSO Act came as a “shocking disclosure”. He observed that many revered religious leaders, who are idolized, may not genuinely embody the integrity they project, labeling the situation as “extremely unfortunate”.
The cleric underlined that such individuals should be kept away from the public eye and held responsible for their actions. “Regardless of the circumstances, anyone engaging in such behavior must face the strictest penalties. However, their influence often shields them due to their status as religious leaders or senior Shankaracharyas,” he noted. He also advocated for a comprehensive investigation of all ashrams and religious organizations to ensure that no misconduct is overlooked.
This statement follows a recent order from a Special POCSO Court in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, which mandated the registration of an FIR against Swami Avimukteshwaranand, his disciple Mukundanand, and two others concerning allegations of child sexual abuse. Special POCSO Judge Vinod Kumar Chaurasia instructed the Jhunsi Police Station to file the FIR based on a complaint submitted by Ashutosh Brahmachari. Two minors were presented during the in-camera hearing.
Rashidi stressed that the government must take these matters seriously, cautioning that incidents involving religious figures must not be overlooked.
