The Chief Minister's Office of Telangana announced on Thursday, 11 June 2026 that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi following the NITI Aayog governing council meeting, presenting a clutch of infrastructure proposals spanning urban mobility, road connectivity, port linkage, aviation, and higher education.

Context

The meeting came on the sidelines of the NITI Aayog session, a routine but high-stakes platform where state chief ministers engage directly with the Union government on development priorities. Revanth Reddy used the opportunity to formally table proposals that Telangana has been building the groundwork for since the state's formation in 2014.

The Chief Minister also urged the Centre to facilitate talks with the Maharashtra government on the efficient utilisation of Godavari river waters for irrigation and drinking water needs, calling it 'critical for the state's future requirements.'

Policy Backdrop

The centrepiece infrastructure ask is Hyderabad Metro Phase-2 — a proposed expansion of 122.9 kilometres across 7 corridors at a project cost of ₹38,595 crore. Revanth Reddy requested that the project be sanctioned as a joint venture between the Central and State governments, mirroring the funding model used for metro expansions in other major Indian cities. The original Hyderabad Metro Phase-1 became fully operational in 2017 under a public-private partnership structure.

On road connectivity, the CM pressed for immediate approval of the Hyderabad Regional Ring Road (RRR). He informed the Prime Minister that the state government has already agreed to bear 50 per cent of land acquisition costs for the northern section and has released ₹626 crore to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). He added that land acquisition awards for over 90 per cent of the northern corridor have been completed. Revanth Reddy also requested that the southern corridor — running from Choutuppal to Sangareddy — be approved and implemented simultaneously with the northern section, noting that alignment maps and HMDA Master Plan notifications have already been submitted to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

A significant new proposal was the Hyderabad–Amaravati–Bandar Port Expressway, described as a 12-lane expressway with a 120-metre Right of Way. The CM told the Prime Minister that the highway would provide landlocked Telangana with critical port connectivity, serving as a key export corridor for the state's pharma, electronics, and food processing industries.

Stakeholders and Impact

Urban commuters in Hyderabad stand to benefit most immediately from the Metro Phase-2 expansion if approved, easing pressure on a road network that serves one of India's fastest-growing metropolitan areas. Farmers and municipal bodies in the Godavari basin are key stakeholders in the inter-state water-sharing discussions with Maharashtra.

On aviation, Revanth Reddy flagged the long-pending Warangal Airport project, stating that the state has already completed land acquisition and handed over the site to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). He argued that an operational Warangal airport would boost industry, education, and tourism across northern Telangana. Separately, the CM requested the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Hyderabad, offering 200 acres of land from the state government and pointing to Telangana's existing cluster of national institutions — IIT, IIIT, NALSAR, and TIFR — as a ready ecosystem. He noted that an IIM would also advance the goals of the National Education Policy 2020.

The proposals now await formal responses from multiple Union ministries — Road Transport and Highways for the Ring Road and expressway, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for Metro Phase-2, the Ministry of Civil Aviation for Warangal Airport, and the Ministry of Education for the IIM. Inclusion in upcoming NHAI or AAI project approval lists, or a mention in the next Union Budget, will be the clearest signals of forward movement.
