Could Policy Support Revive the TN Fireworks Industry?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 15 (NationPress) The fireworks sector in Tamil Nadu is currently facing numerous regulatory and market hurdles, prompting industry leaders to intensify their pursuit of policy support from the Central Government to rejuvenate the industry.
A key industry spokesperson indicated that the sector has been enduring a tough period in recent years due to stricter regulations, seasonal limitations, and diminished access to institutional advantages.
In response, the association representing fireworks producers has begun dialogue with high-ranking government officials, including DPIIT Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia, to advocate for necessary reforms.
The association notes that a major issue is the lack of formal recognition within the current economic classifications.
Firecracker manufacturing units are not distinctly classified under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) framework or the corporate sector, which restricts their eligibility for government subsidies, financial assistance programs, and institutional credit.
According to the representative, "Firecrackers are often perceived as dangerous and hazardous products, which has adversely affected policy support for the industry."
"However, this sector is responsible for providing both direct and indirect jobs to thousands of workers. Obtaining formal recognition is crucial for accessing subsidies and other benefits available to acknowledged industries."
The association has recently submitted comprehensive representations to the Union government, requesting protective measures and policy changes to stabilize the industry. These proposals include financial support systems, easier access to credit, and inclusion in government incentive programs aimed at supporting traditional and labor-intensive sectors.
Another concern highlighted by the industry pertains to operational limitations under the Explosives Act, 2008, which currently prohibits firecracker production during nighttime.
Industry representatives contend that revising and amending certain provisions of this Act, while upholding safety standards, could enhance productivity and enable manufacturers to meet seasonal demands.
The association has called upon the government to adopt a balanced strategy that ensures safety and environmental considerations while also guaranteeing the survival of a traditional industry that supports livelihoods in various regions.
Industry leaders remain optimistic that ongoing discussions with the DPIIT and other stakeholders will yield policy clarity and structured support, allowing the fireworks sector to regain stability and maintain employment in the future.
