Amritsar, March 14 (NationPress) Five individuals sustained injuries when they were assaulted by a man wielding a rod within the Golden Temple premises in Punjab's sacred city of Amritsar, law enforcement reported, noting that the perpetrator was subsequently apprehended and the situation was brought under control.

Chaos ensued as the attacker initiated the assault near the community kitchen (Guru Ram Das langar), where numerous devotees and locals had gathered.

The injured included two sewadars (volunteers) from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

One of the injured individuals has been admitted to the Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Amritsar.

Authorities have detained the assailant along with his accomplice after they were subdued by the crowd. The police indicated that the accused had scouted the area prior to the attack. “The second suspect allegedly conducted reconnaissance alongside the one who assaulted the devotees,” a police officer informed the media.

The primary suspect exited, returned armed with an iron rod, and attacked the SGPC staff and the devotees who attempted to intervene. Four individuals, including the two SGPC sewadars, were harmed.

Station House Officer Sarmel Singh stated that the assailant was identified as Zulfan from Haryana. He also sustained injuries during the incident. An investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the assault.

Authorities reassured the public that there was no cause for alarm.

This incident has incited outrage within the Sikh community. The SGPC, often referred to as the ‘Mini Parliament’ of the faith, has lodged a police complaint against the attacker.

Concerns regarding the safety of devotees have been heightened due to this event.

Previously, a man had opened fire at Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal at the entrance of the Golden Temple in December of the previous year.

The assailant, later identified as Narayan Singh Chaura, was taken into custody after being subdued by one of Badal's security personnel.
