Guwahati, July 27 (NationPress) The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) conducted multiple raids, leading to the recovery of dry ganja (marijuana) estimated at over Rs 3.67 crores this year. Seven individuals associated with the theft of passengers' belongings were also detained, according to officials on Sunday.
The NFR operates across the northeastern states and within seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of north Bihar.
The NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, stated that RPF personnel intensified their operations against the illegal transport of contraband items via railways from July 17 to 24. During this time, RPF teams executed operations at Agartala, Katihar, Bagdogra, Rangapara North, Lumding, and Guwahati railway stations and trains.
Due to these concerted efforts, approximately 168.67 kgs of ganja, valued at around Rs 16.83 lakhs, were seized, leading to the detention of two individuals connected with the recovery.
Moreover, 475 bottles of liquor worth Rs 1.05 lakhs were confiscated, resulting in the arrest of five suspects.
In separate incidents during the same timeframe, RPF personnel apprehended seven individuals for stealing passenger belongings, successfully recovering six stolen mobile phones, a laptop, and cash totaling Rs 1.19 lakhs.
Sharma reported that from the start of the year until July 24, RPF officers have confiscated approximately 3,706.937 kgs of ganja, valued at around Rs 3.67 crores, and have detained 126 drug peddlers related to these seizures.
The contraband and the detained individuals were subsequently transferred to the Government Railway Police (GRP), Katihar, for further legal proceedings.
The RPF remains steadfast in its commitment to achieving a drug-free nation and maintains vigilance against the smuggling and transportation of illegal items at various railway stations and onboard trains, stated the CPRO.
In addition to ensuring passenger safety, the RPF is always ready to offer support and assistance to rail users as needed, he added.
