Sambhal Exploration: Archaeological Team Evaluates Wells and Temple

Sambhal, Dec 21 (NationPress) A group from the Uttar Pradesh archaeological department arrived in Sambhal for a survey on Saturday, as part of an extensive initiative to evaluate the historical significance and age of 19 wells and five revered pilgrimage sites in the city, which faced communal strife last month.
The team reached the Kalki Vishnu temple at approximately 10:45 a.m. and examined the Krishna well situated near the temple, as reported by an official, who mentioned that the age of various structures was under assessment.
Sambhal SDM Vandana Mishra stated that the archaeological team spent around 15 minutes in the area. “They inspected a well and visited the Kalki Vishnu temple,” she remarked, noting there was no information regarding a potential return visit on Sunday.
The city of Sambhal holds sacred significance for Hindus, as numerous religious texts identify it as the birthplace of Kalki, the tenth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Mahender Sharma, the caretaker of Kalki Vishnu temple, reported that the archaeology department officials examined a well on the premises and took photographs of the temple. “I cannot provide the exact age of this temple,” he mentioned, adding that a map from 1,000 years ago references the temple.
He further indicated that the Kalki Vishnu temple is thought to be associated with the Hari Temple mentioned in scriptures as the birthplace of Kalki, the tenth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
The archaeological department recently commenced a thorough survey of Sambhal following a request from District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia to their director for a review of historically and religiously significant structures.
Previously, a team from the ASI surveyed 19 wells and five pilgrimage sites during a nine-hour assessment. If necessary, the team can be summoned again. The report will be prepared based on the survey conducted thus far, according to the DM.
Sambhal experienced violence last month when ASI officials attempted to survey the Shahi Jama Masjid. The incident led to the deaths of at least four individuals and injuries to 20 security personnel.
In addition to local politicians, numerous residents faced police action. Allegations have arisen that the Masjid was built on the remnants of a temple destroyed in the 16th Century.
