Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi on 15 August 2025 called the next 20 years a defining window for India's transformation into a developed nation, as he presided over the 80th Independence Day district-level celebration at the Manjalpur Sports Complex in Vadodara. Hoisting the national flag before a large gathering, Sanghavi framed the occasion not as a ceremonial milestone but as a call to focused, purposeful action ahead of 2047.

The Viksit Bharat Countdown

Sanghavi underscored that India has only two decades remaining to fulfil the 'Viksit Bharat@2047' vision set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi five years ago. 'The 80th Independence Day is not merely a celebration. This occasion is a great inspiration for planning the next 20 years,' he said, urging citizens — particularly the youth — to treat the period as one of contribution rather than commemoration. Notably, the framing shifts the Independence Day narrative from retrospection to forward planning, a rhetorical pattern increasingly common in BJP-governed states.

Vadodara's Historical Legacy

Sanghavi drew on Vadodara's rich historical identity, describing it as a 'school of good governance and nation-building' under the Gaekwad rule. He recalled that the Maharaja had recognised the talent of Dr B.R. Ambedkar and provided financial assistance for his higher education — a contribution Sanghavi said laid early roots for India's constitutional framework. 'The roots of the making of the Indian Constitution and the rights to equality lie in this land of resolve, Vadodara,' he said. He also invoked Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as Gujarat's defining contributions to the independence movement.

Development Figures for Vadodara and Gujarat

Vadodara district has received ₹479 crore under the 15th Finance Commission, with five shelter homes approved for vulnerable communities during natural disasters. Sanghavi said 1.36 crore farmers had received relief over the past decade, and more than 69.25 lakh farmer families in Gujarat had benefited under the PM-Kisan scheme. In Vadodara alone, 1,810 farmers practising natural farming received financial assistance, resulting in the creation of 308 model farms.

On water management, Sanghavi cited the completion of 2.927 million cubic metres of desilting in the Vishwamitri river, the construction of 13 check dams on the Vishwamitri and five on the Surya river for flood mitigation, and the creation of a 250 million-litre buffer lake at the confluence of the two rivers at Dena. More than 2,500 water conservation works have been undertaken under the Jal Shakti Abhiyan, while the ₹650 crore Tapi-Karjan Link Pipeline Project has been launched to strengthen irrigation.

Employment and Tribal Development

Sanghavi highlighted Gujarat's record on jobs, stating that 1,333 recruitment fairs were organised during 2025-26, issuing appointment letters to 1,15,774 youths. Over the past five years, 7,403 mega employment fairs have been held, providing jobs to more than 6.54 lakh young people. Three new government hostels are to be built for students from Vadodara and neighbouring districts under the tribal development initiative, with existing hostel capacity also expanded.

Ceremony and Closing Remarks

Following his address, Sanghavi travelled in an open jeep to greet citizens at the parade ground. A total of 56 employees, officers, sportspersons and citizens were honoured with certificates of appreciation for notable work in Vadodara district. Students from various schools presented patriotic cultural programmes, while 19 platoons — including police personnel — participated in the parade. The celebrations concluded with tree planting under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' initiative. With the 2047 deadline now firmly in political discourse, Gujarat's administration appears to be anchoring local governance milestones to the national vision ahead of what promises to be a consequential two decades.
