Chandigarh, May 5 (NationPress) In a significant tribute to youth-driven volunteerism and patient-focused care, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand on Monday praised the Sarathi Yojana as a groundbreaking initiative capable of revolutionizing healthcare services throughout India.

During the inaugural ‘Sarathi Day’ at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Kataria, who also serves as the Chandigarh Administrator, remarked, “With Sarathi, PGIMER is not only assisting patients but also cultivating a generation that appreciates the profound satisfaction of altruistic service. When young volunteers extend a helping hand for the first time, they truly start to live for others, echoing the vision of Swami Vivekananda.”

Describing the initiative as a “source of hope and accountability among the youth,” the Governor commended PGIMER’s efforts in fostering a deep sense of compassion and community awareness through the Sarathi platform.

He stated that in a facility welcoming thousands daily, SARATHI transcends the role of a mere help desk; ‘it serves as a human bridge of comfort, care, and compassion’.

The Governor underscored the expanding national influence of the Sarathi model.

“A small gesture of support can significantly enhance a patient’s experience. With over 442 hospitals now embracing this model, what originated at PGIMER is evolving into a nationwide movement. I am confident this initiative has the capability to redefine healthcare delivery across India,” he asserted.

The Governor lauded PGIMER’s distinguished status in the medical arena, stating, “When it comes to healthcare, PGI Chandigarh is a name that commands respect, now also celebrated for incorporating humanity into healing through Sarathi.”

In acknowledgment of outstanding contributions, exemplary NSS volunteers and institutions were honored. This included 16 students from the Post Graduate Government College in Sector 11, along with six students from MCMDAV College for Women in Sector 36, and 13 colleges recognized for their enthusiastic involvement and institutional support.

The event was warmly introduced by Prof Vivek Lal, Director of PGIMER, who reminisced about the modest origins of Sarathi as a student-driven initiative that has blossomed into a symbol of compassionate service.
