Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday, 7 August publicly commended engineers, technicians and field staff of the state Power Department for their round-the-clock efforts to restore electricity across flood-ravaged districts of Assam. The Chief Minister said teams were deploying 'every possible means' to reconnect damaged transformers and bring the power grid back online despite waterlogged and hazardous conditions on the ground.

Sarma posted his appreciation on social media platform X, singling out frontline power workers operating in inundated areas. 'A shout out to our Power Department teams, who are using every possible means to reconnect transformers and bring the grid back online,' he wrote, acknowledging the scale of the challenge facing repair crews.

He also highlighted the durability of the state's energy network under extreme stress. 'Equally remarkable is the resilience of our energy infrastructure, which has withstood these unprecedented floodwaters,' Sarma added.

Scale of the Flood Damage

Heavy and sustained rainfall over several weeks has triggered widespread flooding across multiple districts of Assam, damaging roads, bridges, embankments and electrical infrastructure. Transformers, distribution poles and power lines have been submerged or structurally compromised in numerous localities, cutting off supply to large residential and commercial areas.

This is not an isolated event — Assam has faced recurring annual flood cycles, but officials have described the current inundation as particularly severe, with 'unprecedented' floodwaters testing the limits of existing infrastructure.

Restoration Priorities

Power utilities have adopted a triage approach to restoration, prioritising hospitals, relief camps, drinking water facilities and other critical public installations before extending reconnection to residential zones. Supply to general areas is being restored incrementally as floodwaters recede and safe access becomes possible for field crews.
