V.D. Satheesan will be sworn in as Kerala's Chief Minister on Monday in a grand ceremony at the Central Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, ending ten days of intense backroom negotiations and marking the Indian National Congress party's return to power in the state after a significant gap. The swearing-in is expected to draw nearly one lakh attendees.

A Grand Show of Strength

The Congress high command has planned the event as a major political statement. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharge are all expected to be present at the ceremony. The Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Telangana are also scheduled to attend, signalling a show of Opposition solidarity.

The entire cabinet is set to be sworn in alongside Satheesan. In total, 21 MLAs, including Satheesan, will take the oath of office, with the first session of the new Kerala Legislative Assembly scheduled for Thursday, when newly elected members will also be administered their oath.

Ten Days of Uncertainty Before the Decision

Satheesan's elevation came only after protracted deliberations at the highest levels of the Congress leadership. The decisive round of consultations began on Thursday morning, when K.C. Venugopal was summoned to Rahul Gandhi's residence in Delhi. Discussions reportedly lasted close to three hours, at the end of which Gandhi informed Venugopal that the party had decided to back Satheesan for the top post.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also played an active role in building consensus within the party. Rahul Gandhi subsequently spoke to Ramesh Chennithala, who is reported to have expressed strong displeasure over the outcome.

Senior Leaders Converge at Kharge's Residence

As the final shape of the announcement was being worked out, senior Congress figures — including Mukul Wasnik, Ajay Maken, Jairam Ramesh, and Deepa Dasmunsi — gathered at Kharge's residence in Delhi. Once Venugopal publicly accepted the decision, the remaining resistance within the party reportedly dissolved, clearing the path for Satheesan's appointment.

Historical Context

The last Congress Chief Minister to assume office in Kerala was Oommen Chandy, who took charge in 2011. Satheesan's swearing-in will mark the party's return to the state's top post after more than a decade. The United Democratic Front (UDF) leadership is currently meeting in Thiruvananthapuram to finalise the cabinet's composition, including the allocation of ministerial berths among its constituent allies.

With the cabinet composition still being finalised, the UDF's internal arithmetic will be closely watched in the coming days. The new government's first legislative session on Thursday will set the tone for its early priorities.
