The Consulate's announcement stated, “In light of the tragic bus accident near Madina, Saudi Arabia, involving Indian Umrah pilgrims, a 24x7 Control Room has been activated at the Consulate General of India, Jeddah. Officials from the Telangana government have been actively engaging with the Indian embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate General in Jeddah to obtain information about the Umrah pilgrims who tragically lost their lives in the accident near Madina early Monday.
As per the Chief Minister’s Office, discussions took place with the Consulate General in Jeddah and the Deputy Ambassador in Riyadh to ascertain if there were any pilgrims from Telangana among the deceased, and if so, how many.
They directed the Resident Commissioner and Coordination Secretary in Delhi to coordinate with Ministry of External Affairs officials and provide complete updates.
Unconfirmed media reports indicate that at least 42 Indian Umrah pilgrims are feared to have died after their passenger bus, traveling from Mecca to Madina, collided with a diesel tanker early Monday morning.
The accident took place around 1:30 a.m. IST at a site identified as Mufrihat.
