New Delhi, May 6 (NationPress) The Supreme Court has made a significant decision to openly share the assets of its judges by uploading them on its official website.
“On April 1, 2025, the Full Court of the Supreme Court of India resolved that the asset statements of the judges will be made publicly accessible by placing them on the Court's website. The asset statements of judges that have been received are currently being uploaded, while those of other judges will be added as they are submitted,” stated a press release from the highest court.
This initiative aims to enhance transparency within the judiciary, as all Supreme Court judges have consented to declare their assets and make these details available online.
This decision comes in light of a recent cash discovery incident at the residence of a Delhi High Court judge on March 14.
Amid an internal investigation, the judge was recommended for transfer to the Allahabad High Court.
Currently, the Supreme Court operates with a total of 33 judges, out of which 21 have posted their asset declarations on the official website, according to the available information. The court is sanctioned to have 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
“The Full Court of the Supreme Court of India has determined that judges must declare their assets upon taking office and whenever they acquire significant assets, reporting to the Chief Justice,” as mentioned on the Supreme Court's website, which also includes declarations by the CJI.
The public posting of asset declarations on the Supreme Court website will now be mandatory according to the latest Resolution from the Full Court.
In a prior resolution from a Full Court Meeting on May 7, 1997, it was decided that every judge should declare all personal assets, whether real estate or investments held in their name, their spouse's name, or dependents, within a reasonable time frame after taking office.
“This declaration should be made to the Chief Justice, who is also required to make a similar declaration for the record. Such declarations by judges or the Chief Justice shall remain confidential,” the resolution stated.
In August 2009, the Full Bench opted to voluntarily disclose the asset statements submitted by judges on the Supreme Court website.
