New Delhi, Oct 6 (NationPress) The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Monday expressed deep shock, outrage, and strong condemnation regarding the incident where an advocate attempted to assault Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai within the Supreme Court premises. The association is currently contemplating suitable disciplinary measures against the involved temporary member.
Reports indicate that the individual, dressed in legal attire, approached the dais of the CJI Gavai-led Bench and allegedly tried to remove his shoe. Security personnel quickly intervened and escorted him out of the courtroom.
During his removal, the advocate was heard chanting slogans related to Sanatan Dharma. This incident reportedly stemmed from CJI Gavai's comments on the Khajuraho Vishnu Idol Restoration case.
Subsequently, CJI Gavai underscored the importance of respecting all religions and addressed misinformation circulating on social media.
"Someone informed me recently that my comments have been misrepresented on social media. I hold deep respect for all religions," clarified CJI Gavai on September 18.
The SCBA described the advocate's actions as a direct assault on judicial independence, which erodes public trust in the justice system.
“This behavior undermines the fundamental respect that sustains the relationship between the Bench and the Bar. It violates constitutional values of decorum and discipline and diminishes public confidence in the justice delivery system,” asserted the SCBA.
The resolution praised the calm demeanor and remarkable restraint exhibited by CJI Gavai, who continued to fulfill his duties “with dignity and poise” in light of the serious provocation. The bar association noted that the advocate involved is a temporary member and is considering disciplinary action against him.
“The SCBA also acknowledges that the advocate involved in this incident is a temporary member of the Association. The SCBA is considering appropriate disciplinary action against him,” it stated.
In the meantime, CJI Gavai reportedly chose not to pursue any action against the advocate and suggested that the incident should be overlooked.
“Do not let this distract you. We remain focused. Such events do not affect me,” he stated in open court.
Earlier, the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) called for the apex court to take suo motu cognizance of the incident and initiate appropriate contempt proceedings.
