A representative from Lok Bhavan, Manipur, revealed that the state's Governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, along with Union DoNER Scindia, co-chaired the fourth High-Level Task Force meeting via video conferencing on promoting sports in the Northeastern region.
During the meeting, Union Minister Scindia advocated for a focused strategy to enhance sports in the Northeast, introducing the idea of “one sport one state”.
He underscored the importance of coaching quality, talent scouting, and grassroots competitions, urging for organized tournaments from village to state levels as well as the development of discipline-specific case studies for each state.
The Governor acknowledged the initiative, noting that targeted training, talent development, and local leagues would create more opportunities for young athletes across the region, which includes eight states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.
The agenda also included discussions on enhancing sports infrastructure, improving coaching and talent identification systems, promoting competitions in rural areas, and expanding inclusive opportunities for young athletes to sustainably foster sporting excellence, as per the Lok Bhavan official.
In attendance were Mizoram Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Manipur Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, and senior officials from the Northeastern states, the DoNER Ministry, and state sports departments.
Additionally, the DoNER ministry has established several High-Level Task Forces to identify critical interventions and devise actionable short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategies for the integrated development of the North East Economic Corridor.
These task forces on various sectors were constituted following the 72nd plenary session of the North-Eastern Council (NEC), which took place in November of the previous year in Agartala and was chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
