Sealdah Station gets 60 kg rail upgrade in 7-hour overnight mega block
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Sealdah railway station in Kolkata underwent a major infrastructure overhaul on the intervening night of 29–30 August 2026, with Eastern Railway (ER) completing a critical track and signalling upgrade in a seven-hour mega block between midnight and 7 am. The station, which serves nearly 1.6 to 1.8 million passengers daily, is now safer and operationally more efficient ahead of the Durga Puja season.
Core Engineering Work
The centrepiece of the exercise was the conversion of Diamond Switch Point No. 208B/219A from 52 kg to 60 kg rail, incorporating 34.71 metres of heavier rail and seven prefabricated glued joints of 6.5 metres each. According to a senior ER official, old-age point machines were simultaneously replaced along with associated ground fittings, completing a full track-structure upgrade despite significant space constraints at the site.
Signal and Telecommunication Works
Under the direct leadership of Sealdah Divisional Railway Manager Rajeev Saxena, the Signal and Telecommunication (S&T) team executed a comprehensive set of tasks. These included converting Point No. 208B from a Siemens to an IRS point machine, replacing two old-age point machines with ground fittings, laying a new JP-to-point-machine tail cable, changing nine glued joints, replacing 20 track and cross jumpers, and renewing 44 bond wires — all followed by full S&T testing and commissioning.
Traction and Overhead Line Maintenance
The Traction Distribution (TRD) wing used the same block to clear two to three years of overdue maintenance in Power Block Section E/S = X–17/Dum Dum (DDJ) Yard Lines 5 and 6. The team conducted an Annual Overhaul (AOH) between location numbers 5/29E and 5/23E, attending to four cantilevers, cleaning eight insulators, plumbing two displaced cantilevers, and removing two disused bird nests from a portal upright — a level of granular maintenance rarely completed in a single block.
Inter-departmental Coordination
'This successful mega block exemplifies perfect inter-departmental coordination, seamlessly upgrading critical Sealdah yard infrastructure to heavier 60 kg standards while ensuring zero unnecessary disruption to overall train operations,' said ER Chief Public Relations Officer Shibram Majhi. The traffic block was cancelled on time at 07:00 hrs, with all engineering, S&T, and TRD works completed without a single additional traffic interruption. ER General Manager Gitika Pandey personally reviewed progress with senior divisional officials.
Why the Timing Matters
The upgrade was executed ahead of Durga Puja, when Sealdah — already one of the country's busiest terminals — is expected to see a sharp spike in footfall as thousands travel from districts across Bengal for pandal hopping in Kolkata. Officials said the heavier rail standard will add to both safety margins and yard operational efficiency in the weeks ahead.
