Sensex Ends Steady as Investors Anticipate Inflation Figures

Mumbai, Dec 11 (NationPress) The leading Indian stock indices wrapped up the trading session with a stable finish on Wednesday as investors look forward to the release of the November CPI (Consumer Price Index) data, which is set to be disclosed by the government on Thursday.

At the end of trading, the Sensex recorded a modest gain of 16 points, reaching 81,526, while the Nifty increased by 31 points to close at 24,641.

The overall market sentiment was positive. On the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), 2,143 stocks finished higher, 1,839 declined, and 113 remained unchanged.

In terms of sector performance, Auto, IT, Financial Services, pharmaceuticals, FMCG, metals, and realty sectors emerged as top performers, while PSU Bank, media, energy, and private banks lagged behind.

Midcap and smallcap stocks outshone largecap stocks during this trading day. The Nifty midcap 100 index closed at 59,292, marking an increase of 157 points or 0.27 percent, whereas the Nifty smallcap 100 index finished at 19,657, up 74 points or 0.38 percent.

As per market analysts, "The Indian market showed slight fluctuations, mirroring the mixed sentiments in global markets ahead of the release of the US CPI inflation data, which is expected to have implications for FED policy. The US dollar saw strength, while bond yields experienced a slight rise."

"Defensive sectors such as FMCG and pharmaceuticals registered gains. Furthermore, the metals sector rallied due to hopes surrounding potential stimulus measures from China," they noted.

Within the Sensex constituents, top gainers included Bajaj Finance, Nestle India, Bajaj Finserv, Asian Paints, UltraTech Cement, Infosys, Maruti, Bharti Airtel, and Hindustan Unilever. Conversely, JSW Steel, NTPC, SBI, Reliance, Tech Mahindra, Axis Bank, and Titan were among the top losers.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continued their purchasing spree on December 10, acquiring equities valued at Rs 1,285.96 crore, while domestic institutional investors also made purchases worth Rs 605.79 crore on the same day.

The market opened on a flat note. Around 9:27 a.m., the Sensex was trading at 81,515.06 after a slight gain of 5.01 points or 0.01 percent, while the Nifty was at 24,623.8 after an increase of 13.75 points or 0.06 percent.
