Chennai, March 10 (NationPress) Former Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji is set to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on March 17 pertaining to the investigation into the Karur stampede that resulted in multiple fatalities during a political rally last year.

The CBI is scrutinizing the incident that took place on September 27 at Veluchamipuram in the Karur district during an election campaign rally led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay.

The situation escalated when a large crowd amassed at the venue, leading to a stampede that tragically resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals and left many others injured.

The investigative agency has been interrogating various individuals linked to the event as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Previously, several leaders from TVK had appeared before the CBI in New Delhi to aid the investigation. Those questioned include TVK general secretary N. Anand, election campaign management general secretary Adhav Arjun, joint general secretary C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar, and Karur district secretary Mathiyazhagan.

Additionally, the CBI had summoned Vijay to appear before the investigators on March 10 in New Delhi. However, he communicated to the agency that he would be unable to travel to the capital on that date.

In his message to the CBI, he expressed his willingness to fully cooperate with the investigation if a new summons were issued after approximately 10 days, ideally requesting him to appear in Chennai rather than New Delhi.

Considering Vijay's request, the CBI has granted him temporary relief from appearing on Tuesday and is expected to issue a new summons in the near future.

In a related update, the agency has now also summoned former minister Senthil Balaji for questioning in connection with the same case.

Balaji confirmed the development, stating that he had received the CBI summons and would participate in the investigation.

In a statement on the social media platform X, Balaji addressed conflicting reports regarding the summons that had surfaced in various media outlets.

He clarified his stance, stating that he would attend the CBI on March 17, as instructed.

"Regarding the Karur tragedy, the CBI has issued a summons, and there have been some contradictory reports in certain media. According to the summons from the CBI, I will be present on March 17 to respond to their inquiries and provide necessary explanations," he noted.

The CBI investigation into the Karur stampede is ongoing as investigators aim to ascertain the conditions leading to this tragic incident.
