Chennai, Jan 11 (NationPress) The acclaimed actor and president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay, is scheduled to present himself before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi on Monday. This appearance is linked to the ongoing investigation into the tragic Karur campaign stampede that resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals last year, as reported by party officials on Sunday.
Vijay's testimony is expected around 11 a.m., in response to a summons issued by the CBI on January 6 under Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
He has been identified as a witness in the investigation. After discussions with his legal team and party leaders, Vijay has opted to fully cooperate with the CBI and adhere to the summons.
“Legal experts have recommended that should any complications arise during questioning, necessary legal remedies can be accessed through the court,” a party insider disclosed.
“Given that TVK had previously requested a transfer of the investigation from the state police to a central authority or judicial oversight, avoiding the summons at this stage would not be beneficial for us,” the insider added.
The CBI is actively investigating the stampede that occurred on September 27, 2025, at Velusamipuram in the Karur district during a TVK election rally. The incident tragically resulted in 41 fatalities and left over 110 individuals injured.
This investigation was assigned to the central agency following a directive from the Supreme Court, which mandated a CBI inquiry into the case.
As part of this investigation, the agency has already questioned several TVK officials, including N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, CTR Nirmal Kumar, and Mathiyazhagan. They also recorded statements from the Karur District Collector (IAS) and the Superintendent of Police (IPS). These interviews took place over December 29, 30, and 31, with investigators reportedly collecting approximately 19.5 hours of testimony.
In a related development, teams from the CBI, the Union Home Ministry, and the Central Forensic Science Laboratories conducted an inspection on Saturday of the campaign bus used by Vijay during the Karur event.
The bus, which was transported from Chennai and stationed at the PWD guest house in Karur, was examined for its CCTV systems and other onboard features.
The driver, Bharanidharan (34), was also interrogated.
Officials assessed the quality and placement of the bus's cameras, and the entire inspection was documented on video. Reports indicated that high-resolution cameras had been installed on the vehicle used during the campaign.
