Itanagar, May 31 (NationPress) A devastating landslide claimed the lives of seven individuals, including two women and two children, on National Highway-13 in the East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh amid relentless rains, officials reported on Saturday.

An official noted that a vehicle transporting seven occupants was engulfed by a substantial landslide between the Bana-Seppa segment of NH-13 in East Kameng district, resulting in it tumbling into a gorge.

The Maruti car was en route to Seppa when the rain-induced landslide struck on Friday night. The recovery team subsequently retrieved the bodies.

The Bana-Seppa route is notorious for being one of the most landslide-prone areas in Arunachal Pradesh, particularly during the monsoon season, which lasts from June to September.

Arunachal Pradesh's Home Minister and local MLA, Mama Natung, along with Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, expressed their profound sorrow over the tragic incident.

In a heartfelt message, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju stated, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic landslide in Arunachal Pradesh that took the lives of seven innocent individuals. My sincere condolences to the grieving families. May the departed souls find peace. Sending prayers for strength and healing to everyone impacted by this heartbreaking tragedy.”

In a post on his X handle, Mama Natung remarked, “It’s incredibly painful to learn about the loss of seven lives in my Assembly constituency due to a landslide on NH 13 Road between Bana and Seppa.”

The northeastern region, including Arunachal Pradesh, has been experiencing heavy rainfall since Thursday, significantly disrupting daily life.

As a result of the persistent rains and landslides, road connectivity has been severely compromised in numerous districts throughout Arunachal Pradesh.

A hanging bridge in Chulyu village, situated in the Keyi Panyor district, has been completely swept away due to the continuous rainfall.

This bridge was crucial as a shortcut to the main highway leading to Pitapool.
