Itanagar, June 2 (NationPress) Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has reported that Arunachal Pradesh experienced the most intense monsoon rains globally this year.
The northeastern state has faced severe challenges due to these monsoon rains, with multiple landslides occurring across various districts, resulting in the tragic loss of nine lives since May 30.
In a post on his X account, Rijiju, a native of the state, stated on Sunday: "Arunachal Pradesh receives the heaviest monsoon rains in the world."
He shared a distressing video showing a person navigating a traditional hanging bridge in Anjaw district, which is located near the tri-junction of the borders of India, China, and Myanmar. The Union Minister urged people to remain cautious and assured that the government would extend necessary support.
Additionally, the Arunachal Pradesh government has declared an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh for the families of those who perished in landslide-related incidents across the state in the last 48 hours.
The fatalities included nine individuals; seven in East Kameng district and two in Lower Subansiri district, who lost their lives on Friday night due to landslides caused by the relentless rains since May 29.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed his condolences for the deceased and assured that assistance would be provided to the affected communities through local district administrations.
State Home Minister and local MLA Mama Natung, along with Union Minister Rijiju, also expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incidents.
On Friday night, seven individuals, including two women and two children, perished in East Kameng district when a vehicle transporting two families was swept away by a massive landslide along the Bana-Seppa stretch of National Highway-13.
In a separate incident in Lower Subansiri district, two laborers were killed, while two others were rescued after a landslide struck a cabbage farm near the Pine Grove area along the Ziro-Kamle road.
The Chief Minister urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from unnecessary travel, especially at night.
He also advised against venturing into rivers and other water bodies for the time being.
All relevant departments are on high alert to respond to emergencies, as stated by CM Khandu.
