New Delhi, Dec 11 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their grief on Thursday following a tragic incident in Arunachal Pradesh where a truck transporting 22 workers fell off a cliff on December 8.

The President shared her condolences via social media, stating, “I am deeply saddened to hear of the lives lost in a road accident in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the grieving families. I wish a quick recovery to the injured.”

In a message posted on X, the PMO expressed, “I feel distressed by the loss of lives due to the mishap in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh. My thoughts are with those mourning their loved ones. I pray for the rapid recovery of the injured.”

The Prime Minister announced that an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be granted to the families of each deceased individual, while the injured would receive Rs 50,000.

The accident, which reportedly occurred near KM 40, came to light late on Wednesday when a survivor reached the Chipra GREF Camp and alerted authorities.

According to initial information provided by the survivor, the truck lost control on the perilous mountain road and plunged nearly 200 metres into an impenetrable forested gorge.

This site, located approximately 12 km from Chaglagam, is situated in a remote area with limited accessibility.

Notably, there was no information regarding the missing workers reported by any local agency, contractor, or civil representative until the survivor’s arrival, prompting the urgent mobilization of rescue resources.

On Thursday, the Indian Army’s Spear Corps dispatched multiple search and rescue teams along with medical personnel, GREF staff, local police, members of NDRF, and the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Hayuliang.

“At 1155 hours, after four hours of rigorous search and rope descent, the truck was located about 200 metres below the road near KM 40 in a re-entrant that is inaccessible and not visible from helicopters or the road due to dense tree cover and thick foliage. Eighteen bodies have been identified and are being retrieved using belay ropes,” an official reported.

The dense vegetation and steep terrain had initially obscured the vehicle from ground and aerial searches.

To date, 18 bodies have been confirmed at the accident site and are being retrieved using belay systems.

The ADC of Hayuliang has informed SP Anjaw, who has arrived at the site, while the District Medical Officer is en route to assist in the evacuation of casualties and remains.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), requested by the Deputy Commissioner, is also heading to the site.
