Ahmedabad, Aug 17 (NationPress) A devastating road accident occurred near Dedadara village in Surendranagar district on Sunday afternoon, claiming the lives of seven individuals. The incident transpired when a Swift Dzire collided head-on with a Tata Harrier SUV around 3:30 pm. Following the crash, the Dzire caught fire, tragically trapping all passengers within. Authorities confirmed that all seven individuals in the car perished in the flames, while three occupants of the SUV managed to escape with minor injuries.
The accident caused significant traffic disruptions on the busy highway until locals, police, and a 108 emergency team arrived for rescue operations. Investigations are underway to determine the factors leading to this collision.
Over recent years, Gujarat has seen a troubling rise in road accident injuries and fatalities, despite an overall drop in the number of accidents. In 2024, more than 162,000 individuals were hospitalized due to road incidents, averaging 19 injuries every hour statewide. In the first seven months, Ahmedabad recorded 15,489 injury cases, contributing to a statewide total nearing 93,000, translating to 18 injuries per hour.
Data from early 2025 indicates that from January through April, Gujarat experienced 52,243 injuries, averaging around 498 accidents daily, or 21 injuries every hour. Ahmedabad continued to lead in injury cases, followed by Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Gandhinagar.
Between 2018 and 2022, Gujarat reported 80,150 road accidents, resulting in 36,626 fatalities. Alarmingly, 15,978 of these deaths involved victims who were not wearing seat belts or helmets. Key factors contributing to these accidents included overspeeding, unlicensed driving, and vehicle overloading.
In response, the Gujarat government has implemented various initiatives aimed at reducing road accidents, emphasizing stricter traffic law enforcement, enhanced infrastructure, and awareness campaigns. The Gujarat Road Safety Authority (GujRoSA) is actively involved in identifying and rectifying dangerous road spots, installing speed cameras, and enforcing stricter penalties for violations such as riding without helmets, drunk driving, and speeding.
Furthermore, the state has invested in highway patrol vehicles, expanded the 108 emergency response services for prompt medical assistance, and adopted technology-based monitoring systems like Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). Awareness campaigns in educational institutions, mandatory road safety education, and initiatives promoting seat belt and helmet usage are also being ramped up.
Despite a reduction in total accidents, the government is now prioritizing a decrease in fatalities through more effective enforcement and expedited trauma care.
