Bhopal, Aug 14 (NationPress) In an effort to boost tourism while prioritizing environmental conservation, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has unveiled plans to introduce Shikara boats on the celebrated Upper Lake of Bhopal.
This announcement was made during the 'Tiranga Yatra' event commemorating the 79th anniversary of India's Independence at the 'Boat Club' situated on Upper Lake.
Shikaras, a type of traditional wooden boat famously linked to the tranquil waters of Kashmir's Dal Lake, are utilized for various purposes such as sightseeing, transportation, fishing, and gathering aquatic plants. The launch of this initiative is expected to occur soon.
"Lakes in Jammu and Kashmir have been revered for their natural beauty and water-related activities. Likewise, Bhopal's Upper Lake has tremendous potential and is equally remarkable. The introduction of Shikara boats will provide a similar experience, enhancing its reputation as a top destination," remarked the chief minister on Thursday.
These traditional boats are already sparking public interest and are being promoted as an exciting tourism initiative by the state's Tourism Department.
As people relish the lakes of Kashmir, they will soon enjoy the same charm and tranquility in Bhopal.
"Our government is diligently working to transform this vision into reality, further increasing the appeal and accessibility of our water bodies for both residents and visitors," he stated.
A portion of the lake is recognized as a Ramsar site, emphasizing its ecological significance. However, the lake's tourism potential has historically been limited by environmental regulations.
In 2023, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned the use of motorized boats and cruise vessels on the lake, highlighting the necessity to maintain its ecological integrity.
The tribunal stressed that water bodies are public assets and should be shielded from commercial exploitation.
In light of these restrictions, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation has shifted toward a more sustainable approach. In June 2025, the Corporation announced that plans for Shikara rides were developing, with ten boats already in operation and twenty more expected.
These boats will not only provide scenic rides but will also feature floating shops, creating a lively and immersive experience for tourists. The initiative is envisioned as a blend of Kashmiri charm and Bhopal's local culture.
Officials are hopeful that this initiative will flourish and broaden, offering a tranquil alternative to the previously prohibited motorized cruises. The move has garnered support from both residents and environmentalists, who view it as a prudent compromise between tourism development and ecological conservation.
The Upper Lake, also known as Bada Talab or Badi Jheel, spans over 31 square kilometers and was constructed in the 11th century.
