Bhopal, July 9 (NationPress) In a significant initiative to rejuvenate one of Bhopal’s renowned hospitality landmarks, the Madhya Pradesh government has introduced a reimbursement for stamp duty and registration fees for the private entity chosen to redevelop the Lake View Residency Hotel, formerly known as Lake View Ashoka Hotel.
This decision, approved by the state cabinet on Wednesday, is a part of a wider public-private partnership strategy aimed at transforming the aging property into a contemporary, revenue-generating asset.
Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla confirmed that tenders have already been issued, and the stamp duty reimbursement is designed to incentivize potential investors.
Situated on the banks of the Upper Lake, the hotel has long represented Bhopal’s tourism allure but has faced financial difficulties since its establishment. Initially owned by the Indian Tourism Development Corporation, the property came under state management in 2017 when Madhya Pradesh acquired a majority share. Now, the government aims to revitalize the 7.16-acre site by collaborating with a reputable private hospitality brand.
The chosen partner will need to invest Rs 150 crore in the redevelopment, which entails adding more rooms and a 1,000-seat banquet hall.
The project is anticipated to be completed within three years of the contract award.
Tourism Principal Secretary Sheo Shekhar Shukla, in a conversation with IANS earlier, highlighted that this arrangement is not a sale but a 30-year lease under which the state maintains ownership.
The government expects an initial annual revenue of Rs 3 crore from concession fees, with a 5% annual increase.
Within three years, revenues are projected to grow to Rs 7 - 8 crore annually. The hotel's current staff will be reassigned to other properties managed by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation.
Meanwhile, the tourism department continues to broaden its reach, having recently opened new hotels in Shahdol’s Sarsi Island, Pachmarhi, and Ujjain’s Maharajwara.
With its lakeside location, vintage train-carriage restaurant, and open-air cinema, the Lake View Ashoka is set for a revival—one that could reshape Bhopal’s hospitality sector.
