Shimla: New Year Celebrations Turn Somber After Tragic Accident Claims Three Lives

Shimla, Jan 1 (NationPress) The joyous New Year celebrations took a devastating turn for the families of three young individuals who tragically lost their lives in a road accident in Shimla.

The incident happened on Tuesday night near the petrol station close to Matiyana, along National Highway-5. The three youths from Kinnaur were en route from Shimla to Rampur when their vehicle veered out of control and plunged into a steep gorge. All three succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

Local residents rushed to the location upon hearing the youths’ desperate cries, promptly notifying the police and local authorities. Unfortunately, by the time emergency teams arrived, all three had already lost their lives.

The identities of the deceased are still being confirmed. However, preliminary investigations by the police indicate that these individuals hailed from Kinnaur district.

The Theog Police Station has filed a first information report (FIR) concerning the accident.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Siddharth Sharma stated that the cause of the accident is currently under investigation. The deceased are in the process of being identified, and once the post-mortem examinations are completed, their remains will be returned to their families.

Shimla experienced a significant influx of tourists for the New Year celebrations, leading to nearly full hotel occupancy.

According to Shimla's Meteorological Department, clear weather is expected to persist across the hill state until January 3, after which there may be increased chances of rain and snow.

They also issued a warning regarding potential frost and a continued cold wave across the region following last week's extensive snowfall and rain.

However, locals express their frustration over the sudden surge in tourist numbers, resulting in severe traffic congestion and overcrowded parking areas.

Long lines of vehicles have been reported throughout the day at the state entry point in Parwanoo town on the Chandigarh-Shimla National Highway 5, causing significant delays for daily commuters who find themselves spending hours longer than usual to travel.
