Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday, 26 September announced that Shiv Sena will provide financial assistance for the weddings of children belonging to farmers in drought-affected regions of Maharashtra. The announcement was made through Shinde's official social media handles and underscores the party's pledge to stand by the agrarian community amid a deepening rural crisis.

Why This Initiative Was Announced

Farmers across drought-stricken belts of Maharashtra are battling severe financial hardship triggered by monsoon failure, widespread crop degradation, and mounting debt. Wedding expenditures, which carry enormous social weight in rural households, have historically pushed vulnerable families to extreme distress — including suicide. Shinde stated that Shiv Sena was stepping in specifically to ensure no farmer felt compelled to take such a step due to the burden of a child's marriage.

Eligible families in drought-declared districts have been urged to contact their local Shiv Sena representatives, who will coordinate both financial and logistical support through party channels.

Scale of the Drought Crisis

The Maharashtra government has formally declared drought across 265 tehsils. The announcement of the wedding support initiative follows Shinde's recent on-ground visits to affected farmlands, where he assured farmers that their Diwali would not be spent in darkness. The Shiv Sena's marriage support programme is intended to supplement — not replace — administrative relief packages already being rolled out by the state.

Government Relief Measures Already in Place

Shinde outlined a broad package of state-level interventions currently underway. Land revenue levies have been waived, loan recovery processes stayed, and crop loans restructured. Orders have been issued to prevent disconnection of agricultural power pumps over unpaid electricity bills, and energy tariff concessions have been extended. School and college examination fees for students from affected families have also been waived.

Norms under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) have been relaxed to expand local employment opportunities. Drinking water tanker deployment, fodder supply for livestock, food grain security measures, and water conservation projects are being accelerated across affected districts.

Crop Loss Assessment and Compensation

District Collectors have been directed to conduct transparent crop loss assessments — known as panchnamas — using GPS coordinates and geotagged photography to ensure accuracy and accountability. Compensation tied directly to crop damage will be disbursed under a separate Government Resolution once field evaluations are finalised.

As Maharashtra's agrarian distress deepens ahead of the festive season, the convergence of government relief and party-driven welfare initiatives will be closely watched for its reach and effectiveness on the ground.
