Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 13 (NationPress) The Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, D. K. Shivakumar, stated on Tuesday that the elections for the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) will take place within the timeline mandated by the Supreme Court.
While addressing the media at the Palace Grounds, Shivakumar, who also oversees the Bengaluru Development portfolio, remarked: "We will adhere to the Supreme Court directive for the GBA elections. We will issue the necessary instructions to the State Election Commission accordingly."
Regarding the opposition's potential alliance, he added: "If the BJP and JD-S choose to merge and compete in the elections, it doesn’t concern us."
When questioned about the Supreme Court's deadline for the GBA elections, he mentioned, “The State Election Commission has filed an affidavit with the Court, and that matter is now their responsibility.”
"The government will provide all essential directives. We also need to organize Zilla and Taluk panchayat elections, and we will fulfill all necessary requirements as per the 73rd and 74th Amendments to the Constitution," he stated.
On the topic of technical objections, Shivakumar said: "Some individuals have raised technical concerns... we have established a committee to address it."
"We will proceed and issue instructions to the Election Commission. There are discussions about the adequacy of women’s reservations; we will instruct them to review it, but we will not intervene in this matter," he noted.
He dismissed the idea of the government requesting additional time from the court.
When asked about the challenges of the local body elections, he replied: "What challenge? Conducting elections is our duty. We are nurturing new leaders by empowering party members. We are confident about performing well in all five corporations."
Responding to queries regarding the alliance between the BJP and JD-S, he said: "They can choose to compete separately or together. A direct contest would be expected if they maintain the same arrangement as for the Parliamentary elections."
The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the civic polls in Bengaluru must conclude by June 30, emphasizing that no further extensions would be granted for the elections.
