New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) The Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated on Thursday that the trade agreement between India and the United States offers robust protection for the nation’s agricultural sector, especially regarding farming and dairy industries.

Speaking to reporters, Chouhan emphasized that key staples such as grains, fruits, and dairy products are entirely safe from any threats.

He assured that the agreement prioritizes the interests of both small and large farmers, fostering new opportunities for Indian agriculture rather than posing any risks.

"The market segments have not been opened in a way that could jeopardize Indian farmers, ensuring that all significant crops, food grains, fruits, and dairy products are adequately protected," he remarked.

Addressing a recent post by the US Treasury Secretary regarding enhanced access for American agricultural products, Chouhan highlighted that Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has already clarified this matter in Parliament.

"India's markets remain closed to any pressures that could adversely affect domestic farmers, with protections for critical agricultural commodities being maintained," he reiterated.

The Minister pointed out that India’s rice exports have flourished, reaching about Rs 63,000 crore, with ongoing exports to various countries, including the United States.

He noted that decreased tariffs will directly benefit exports of rice, spices, and textiles, which in turn will support millions of cotton farmers.

Chouhan asserted that this deal is unquestionably favorable for Indian farmers, unveiling new export pathways, notwithstanding the misleading narratives propagated by the opposition.

"We will provide all the details of the agreement in due time. The fundamental principle remains unwavering: the protection of Indian farmers’ interests is paramount," he added.

The Agriculture Minister also underscored the importance of clear communication to alleviate any confusion or anxiety among farmers, given the agricultural sector's vast scale.

"Farmers are our annadata, the providers of life. Their prosperity is synonymous with the nation’s prosperity, and their interests are wholly secure," he emphasized.

Point of View

It is essential to recognize that the assurances given by the government regarding the India-US trade agreement highlight a commitment to protecting the interests of our farmers. While there are concerns, the emphasis on safeguarding agriculture and dairy sectors should be acknowledged, indicating a balanced approach towards international trade.
