Shivraj Singh Chouhan meets MP CM Mohan Yadav in Bhopal, reviews Centre-State development agenda
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday, 6 July paid a courtesy call on Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav at the Chief Minister's residence in Bhopal. The meeting centred on the state's development priorities, agriculture, rural development, infrastructure, and the coordinated implementation of public welfare schemes between the Centre and the state.
Key Discussions
According to a statement issued by Chouhan's office, the two leaders reviewed ongoing development initiatives in Madhya Pradesh and assessed the progress of central schemes being rolled out across the state. Agriculture and rural development — both core portfolios for Chouhan at the Union Cabinet level — were among the primary areas of focus.
Significance of the Meeting
The meeting carries added weight given Chouhan's deep familiarity with the state. He served as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for nearly 17 years before transitioning to the Union Cabinet following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Yadav, who took charge of the state after the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) victory in the 2023 Assembly elections, has continued to work closely with the Centre on development and welfare delivery. Notably, this was the second such meeting between the two leaders at the Chief Minister's residence in recent months — the first having taken place on 29 April, when similar issues of state development and welfare programmes were discussed.
BJP's Position on Centre-State Coordination
The BJP has consistently maintained that the Centre and the Madhya Pradesh government are operating in close coordination to accelerate development and ensure effective implementation of welfare schemes, particularly in agriculture and rural sectors. Monday's meeting reinforced that stated alignment, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to the state's progress.
Chouhan's Sapling Pledge
During his visit to Bhopal, Chouhan also planted a sapling at Smart City Park, continuing a daily pledge he has maintained for years. 'As part of my pledge to plant a sapling every day, I planted one today at the Smart City Park in Bhopal. With a little effort from all of us, the Earth will become green and prosperous. I urge you, too, to plant saplings and contribute in every possible way to realising this pledge,' he said. The gesture underscored his long-standing personal commitment to environmental awareness alongside his political engagements.
Both leaders are expected to continue engaging on the implementation of flagship central schemes in the state in the months ahead.
