New Delhi, July 15 (NationPress) The insights acquired by IAF Group Captain Shubanshu Shukla during his time aboard the International Space Station (ISS) will be of immense benefit to India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight initiative, stated ISRO on Tuesday.
The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft named "Grace" carrying IAF Group Captain Shukla and three other astronauts, part of the Axiom Space Mission-4 (Ax-4), successfully splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off California’s coast at 3:01 p.m. IST (4:31 AM CT).
According to Nilesh M Desai, Director of the Space Applications Centre at ISRO, "The experience acquired by Shubanshu Shukla during his time on the ISS will be invaluable for the Gaganyaan programme slated for the next two years."
In an interview with IANS, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh remarked that Shukla’s safe return from the ISS solidifies India’s enduring position in the realm of space.
He stated, "This success has indeed established India’s place in the space sector. It is a moment of pride not just for us but for the entire globe, especially for India — a truly historic occasion..."
Shukla, along with fellow astronauts Peggy Whitson (USA), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary), boarded SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft "Grace" at 3:30 a.m. CT (2 PM IST) on Monday.
Shukla reached the ISS on June 26, marking a historic achievement as the first Indian to arrive at the International Space Station. He also became the second Indian astronaut to venture into space, following Rakesh Sharma's journey in 1984.
“Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s successful return from the historic Axiom-4 mission is a moment of pride for all Indians. Meanwhile, Shukla’s family expressed their joy and pride regarding his safe return.

We are particularly thankful to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, whose efforts made this achievement possible..." said Shukla's father Shambhu Dayal Shukla to IANS.
During his over two-week stay aboard the ISS, Shukla completed more than 310 orbits, covering an incredible distance of 1.3 crore kilometers — equivalent to traveling 33 times the distance between Earth and the Moon.
The crew also experienced over 300 sunrises and sunsets from the orbital laboratory.
Shukla and his fellow crew members will now undergo a rehabilitation program (approximately seven days) under the guidance of Flight Surgeons to readjust to Earth’s gravity.
