Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 7 (NationPress) Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah conveyed heartfelt greetings to women statewide on the occasion of International Women’s Day, reaffirming the government’s dedication to enhancing women’s empowerment through diverse welfare programs.
In his message to the citizens, the Chief Minister extended his wishes to all women, including mothers, sisters, and daughters.
He emphasized that the essence of International Women’s Day lies in promoting awareness about women's empowerment, equality, and dignity while celebrating their accomplishments across social, economic, educational, cultural, and political domains.
Siddaramaiah highlighted the evolving role of women in society, noting significant changes in both familial and public spheres. He acknowledged the resilience of women who have triumphed over various social and physical hurdles, excelling in fields ranging from domestic duties to groundbreaking achievements in science and space.
However, he pointed out that despite this advancement, issues like gender inequality, domestic violence, and harassment in workplaces remain regrettably prevalent.
The Chief Minister stated that in earlier times, the societal impact of Manusmriti made equitable opportunities for women a challenge. He referred to the 12th-century social justice movement led by Basavanna and other Sharanas, which not only fought against the caste system but also championed gender equality. This movement saw influential women like Akka Mahadevi actively participating in social reform.
He noted that while the British introduction of Western education improved women's social standing, complete equality was still out of reach. Post-Independence, the Constitution framed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar provided essential protections against gender discrimination and opened up new avenues for women.
Siddaramaiah remarked that women have maximized these opportunities, often excelling in education and professional domains. Citing recent results from the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), he noted that over 25 candidates from Karnataka were selected, including many women who secured impressive ranks. He congratulated these successful candidates and expressed hope that their achievements would motivate more young women to pursue careers in civil services like the IAS and IPS.
Highlighting the government's initiatives, the Chief Minister stated that the state administration has embarked on a new chapter in women's empowerment over the past two and a half years. He mentioned several government guarantee schemes such as Gruha Lakshmi, Shakti, and Gruha Jyothi, all designed to support women.
According to him, the Shakti scheme, which offers free bus travel for women, has empowered them to travel independently for education, employment, and health without relying on family heads. He noted a significant 23% rise in women’s participation in the workforce in Bengaluru, with other areas of the state showing similar improvements.
He added that the Gruha Lakshmi and Gruha Jyothi schemes have alleviated the financial pressures on women managing households. The Chief Minister also highlighted that Karnataka became the first state to implement mandatory paid menstrual leave for women aged 18 to 52 working in specific government and registered establishments.
He stated that the government has allocated Rs 94,663 crore for women-focused programs in the 2026–27 state budget, underscoring its commitment to ensuring equal progress for women.
Siddaramaiah described women as a vital and unique force in society, fulfilling multiple roles as mothers, sisters, and partners while also contributing significantly to the workforce. He noted that International Women’s Day serves as a moment to honor the sacrifices, service, and dedication of women.
The Chief Minister once again extended his greetings to all women in Karnataka on this meaningful occasion.
