Supreme Court Grants Bail to Pawan Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh in Sidhu Moose Wala Murder Case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 12 (NationPress) — The Supreme Court has granted bail to two individuals, Pawan Kumar Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh, implicated in the shocking murder case of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala from 2022.
A Bench comprised of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta provided this relief while reviewing their Special Leave Petitions (SLPs), which contested the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s earlier denial of bail.
Bishnoi is accused of being part of a network that facilitated the murder by organizing the vehicle allegedly used in the crime. His legal representative argued that the sole accusation against him revolves around providing a Bolero vehicle, emphasizing that he has been in custody for nearly four years and that a resolution to the trial is expected to take a significant amount of time.
Conversely, the Punjab Police opposed the bail, claiming that Bishnoi had reportedly made several calls to co-accused individuals regarding the vehicle linked to the murder.
The Supreme Court also approved bail for co-defendant Jagtar Singh, suspected of aiding in the reconnaissance of Moosewala’s residence. His counsel maintained that the cameras positioned near the singer's home were installed for his own protection, not for any criminal surveillance.
Previously, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had dismissed the bail applications, noting that the gravity of the accusations outweighed the potential harm caused by trial delays.
The High Court stated, “It may be prudent to wait for the eyewitnesses' statements to be recorded before considering the request for regular bail, ensuring a secure environment for their testimonies.”
Sidhu Moose Wala was tragically shot dead on May 29, 2022, in Punjab's Mansa district, an incident that reverberated throughout the nation and sparked a comprehensive investigation into organized crime networks.
The Punjab Police have implicated Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar and his leader, Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently imprisoned in Tihar Jail, as key figures in Moose Wala's assassination.
Brar, part of the Bishnoi gang, is named in an extensive 1,850-page police chargesheet filed in a Mansa court, which suggests that Moose Wala's murder was a retaliatory act following the death of a youth leader from the Akali party.
Others mentioned in the charges include incarcerated gangsters Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, along with Manmohan Mohana, Deepak Tinu, Sandeep Kekda, Ankit Sirsa, Priyavrat Fauji, Sachin Bhiwani, Keshav, Kashish, Manpreet Manu, and Jagroop Roopa.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by the Anti-Gangster Task Force head, Pramod Ban, is examining Moose Wala's murder. Ban has reported that Bishnoi, identified as the principal conspirator, confessed to orchestrating the execution in August 2021 to avenge the murder of the Akali Dal leader.
